Egg Freezing

Egg Freezing, technically referred to as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process where oocytes (egg cells) are immersed in a series of solutions which dehydrate the cells and replace the water molecules with cryoprotectant, thereby protecting the integrity of the cells during the freezing process. The oocytes are loaded into specially designed straws and placed into liquid nitrogen tanks for long-term storage. These frozen oocytes may be subsequently thawed and used for a future attempt at pregnancy.

The two primary methods used in the industry for freezing are slow freezing and vitrification – a method that uses fast freeze technology. CNY Fertility performs vitrification, the highest standard of cryopreservation available today as our method for egg freezing.

There are many reasons that a woman would decide to freeze her eggs. At Queer Conception we make no judgment or restrict in any way who is allowed to freeze their eggs other than what is prohibited by law or when medically unsafe.

Most often however, women choose to freeze their eggs and preserve their future fertility for a few main reasons:

To give them the freedom to pursue their career without the worry of their “biological clock” ticking away. Yes, it is certainly true that some women who choose to freeze their eggs end up not needing their eggs but having your eggs preserved in the height of your fertility can certainly take a lot off your mind.

Women who must undergo medical treatments such as chemotherapy for cancer or other treatments which may affect their fertility.

THE RISK

It is important for you to know that oocyte (egg) freezing is currently considered investigational as eggs are much more delicate than embryos when it comes to the freezing and thawing process. Although significant advances have been made in the technique, there may still be significant attrition during the thaw process. As such, success rates per oocyte are still lower than those when freezing embryos. As such, Queer Conception is currently performing oocyte cryopreservation on an investigational basis as recommended by ASRM.

Egg banking cycles can cost $1,900. This price includes anesthesia, retrieval, cryopreservation and storage of oocytes for 12 months. Storage after 12 months is $350 per year.

As with all of our treatments, this $1,900 can be financed allowing you to make smaller more affordable monthly payments of around $200 per month. There is no interest when financing with CNY Fertility, but we do charge a monthly account maintenance fee of $250 per 6 months financed – roughly $40/month.

*Medications and monitoring are not included in this price.

While our website is a fantastic resource to learn about the basics of fertility, and the treatment plans offered at Queer Conception, remember that we are here to help along any step of the way.
